Demographic Transition

The Demographic Transition that has taken place in Sri Lanka over the past 130 years is described in four phases.The first phase, pre 1946, the second phase 1947-1970, the third phase, 1971-2000, and the fourth phase 2001 and beyond. The last phase has to be seen as a period of social and economic readjustment to the realities of the demographic transition.
