"Fairfield Porter (1907-1975) is one of the great American artists of the postwar period. His work is widely loved for its lyricism and apparently realist subject matter: still lifes, studio and other interiors, landscapes in Southampton, N.Y., and Great Spruce Head Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine, and portraits - including his many friends among the leading poets and artists of the New York School.
