About

Before. Miles “Pudge” Halter is done with his safe life at home. His whole life has been one big non-event, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave “the Great Perhaps” even more (Francois Rabelais, poet). He heads off to the sometimes crazy and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young. She is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the…

Well let me start by saying that I really loved John Green's writing style in 'The fault in our stars', which was the main reason why I gave this book a chance. Story To me this book was basically at least two complete individual books (maybe even three). In the beginning we have a typical and cute love story and a teenager being away from home for the first time for a longer period. Then there is a book about the grieve of losing a person. All in all the story is well plotted but gets a little boring in the second part of the book. The prank in the end also seems rather disappointing and not special at all. I liked the topics being discussed in the book: Grieve, Death, Religion, Last words etc. Characters I think the characters could have been developed in much more detail. The only one developed enough was The Colonel. Alaska, Miles (not to mention Lara and Takumi) did not really come across as individual beeings. Additionally while I do like Green's smart writing style, I just dont find it very believable that young adults would speak the way that The Colonel and Alaska did. The dialogs therefore sounded often silly to me. However I think this is a solid novel, a nice and easy read and a must if you like Green's style.
