Life in an Italian neighborhood in 1940s Chicago. The protagonists are an Italian-American policeman, his Lithuanian wife, two daughters and a mother-in-law. One girl is given to fantasy and when the parents consider sending her to an institution, the sister runs away in a gesture of solidarity, forcing the parents to reconsider. A first novel.
