In the 1960s LeWitt began investigating the cube—a form that remained an essential element of his artistic language throughout his career. But in 1973, the artist started to literally take the cube apart. The Conceptual artist’s exploration places emphasis on the idea rather than the art object, and so LeWitt asked: how many variations could be created by systematically subtracting parts from an open cube?
